Building an audience that compounds: storytelling, PR, content and turning reputation into deal flow.
← All episodesMost professionals treat reputation as something that helps them get paid. It is worth considering the alternative: that what you are known for is an asset in its own right, and that a salary is only one of the forms it can be converted into.
The example everyone knows is Michael Jordan, and almost everyone takes the wrong lesson from it. The usual telling is that he invested his earnings well. What actually happened is that he licensed his name and took a share of every unit rather than a fee. He did not buy a shoe company. The asset was who he was, and he refused to sell it outright. That is a second kind of conversion, and it is available to people who will never be famous.
Which is where audience comes in, and where most founders get impatient. Building one is slow, unglamorous and compounds invisibly for a long time before it does anything. But an audience is the only distribution you own. Everything else is rented from a platform or borrowed from someone who introduced you. And in this business, reputation is what turns a cold conversation into a warm one, which is another way of saying it is what determines what reaches you at all.
The episodes here cover the practical side of that work: telling a story that is true and still worth listening to, publishing consistently when nothing appears to be happening, what actually converts attention into relationships, and the uncomfortable question of how much of yourself belongs in public. Also the trap on the other side, which is building an audience so carefully optimized that it stops sounding like you and starts sounding like everyone else who read the same advice.
In Spanish and English, each with a written version that carries the idea further than the video did.
