This is the topic that looks out of place next to capital stacks and waterfalls, and it belongs here more than the others do. Every decision in this business is made by a body. The quality of your judgment on a Thursday afternoon has more to do with how you slept and whether you moved than with any framework you have memorized.

The pattern is easy to recognize in founders. Years of pushing through, treating recovery as something for later, running on a level of depletion that becomes normal because everyone around them is also depleted. It works for a surprisingly long time, which is the trap, and the bill arrives as impatience, poor risk assessment and a slow erosion of the very clarity the work depends on.

I came to this the way most people do, through something that forced the question. A polo accident that could easily have ended differently made it very clear how little of what happens to us is inside our control, and how much of what is inside our control we postpone. The lesson was not caution. It was that the foundation gets built before the storm or it does not exist.

The episodes here are practical rather than aspirational: energy as the actual constraint rather than time, why training and sleep are inputs to allocation quality instead of hobbies competing with it, how to structure a week that survives travel and time zones, and the honest version of longevity, which is far less interesting than what gets sold and considerably more effective.
