Board member, Mubadala Energy and ACELEN · Founding executive, Mubadala · Founding CEO, Mubadala Petroleum
Maurizio La Noce spent four decades building and governing institutional capital. He was employee number five at what became one of the largest sovereign investors in the world, and he has spent the twenty years since deciding how that kind of money should be deployed: in boardrooms, in transactions, and in the companies he built himself.
Maurizio joined the firm in 2026 as an advisor. Having helped build a sovereign investment platform from its first five employees, he brings the discipline of institutional capital together with the judgment of an operator who has created, capitalized and run businesses from inception through scale. His work with the firm covers five areas.
Since retiring from full-time employment in 2020, Maurizio has worked as an independent senior advisor, mentor and board member. He sits on the boards of Mubadala Energy in the United Arab Emirates and ACELEN in Brazil. After twenty-six years in the Emirates he returned to the United States and, from January 2021, supported Mubadala Investment Company as an independent senior advisor, focusing on assets across the portfolio while mentoring executives preparing for new assignments.
As one of the five original founders of Mubadala, today approximately $385 billion in assets under management, Maurizio led the industry, energy and oil and gas development and investment units from 2004 to 2010. From the earliest days of the institution he contributed to landmark accomplishments across several sectors: the establishment of Masdar, the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company; the development of Emirates Aluminium's smelter in Abu Dhabi; and the co-creation of GlobalFoundries, now a leading global semiconductor manufacturer. In the period before Mubadala's formation he led the commercial and contractual structuring of the Dolphin Project.
He then engineered and led the creation of Mubadala Petroleum, the largest independent operating energy company headquartered in the Middle East, and served as its first chief executive officer from 2010 to 2014. A wholly owned subsidiary of Mubadala, it focused on oil and gas exploration and production across the Eastern Hemisphere, and has since been rebranded Mubadala Energy to reflect its wider strategic scope.
From 2015 to December 2020 he was senior advisor and chief of staff to the chief executive of Mubadala's petroleum and petrochemicals sector, with responsibility spanning $45 billion of assets across the entire hydrocarbon value chain, supporting the chief executive directly on the strategic investments and acquisitions central to the institution's objectives.
Before joining Mubadala in 2002, Maurizio held senior commercial and leadership positions at Atlantic Richfield and Enron International, on assignments in Milan, London, Dallas and the United Arab Emirates.
Over the past twenty years Maurizio has served on the boards of Emirates Global Aluminium, NOVA Chemicals in Canada, Emirates Aluminium in Abu Dhabi, Masdar, GlobalFoundries in the United States, Spyker Cars in the Netherlands, Saab in Sweden, and London Array in the United Kingdom, holding committee chairmanships including audit, security, people and compensation, strategy, and project review.
Maurizio earned a degree in industrial electronics in Milan and completed his hydrocarbons education at the Oxford College of Petroleum Studies in the United Kingdom, 1989 to 1990. In 2009 he was made Commendatore of the Italian Republic by Giorgio Napolitano, the eleventh President of Italy, on the nomination of the Italian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, in recognition of his contribution to business and social ties between Italy and the Emirates.
