Shawn Walchef opened Cali BBQ in a Spring Valley strip mall during the 2008 Great Recession and, when the restaurant nearly failed, turned to digital storytelling — building Cali BBQ Media, a company that now creates content for 23 best-in-class restaurant technology brands and reaches millions of screens from Navy bases to Snapdragon Stadium. Raised by his Bulgarian grandfather who taught him to stay curious, get involved, and ask for help, Shawn spent five unprofitable years learning to build a media business before it became more scalable than the restaurant itself.
